State Assets Policy Coalitions: Innovating Asset Building in a Changing Economic Environment

CSD and the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City hosted a national strategy meeting for state asset-building coalitions. Participants discussed a range of issues pertaining to coalition development, strategic planning to address the current economic crisis, and policy issues. Support was provided by the Annie E. Child Development Accounts: Research and Policy Symposium

Child Development Account (CDA) research and policy is a rapidly growing and productive body of work. This symposium offered an opportunity to access the state of knowledge on CDAs and related topics, particularly in the United States. The emphasis was on interdisciplinary research and dialogue, and application of knowledge to policy and practice. We anticipate that the knowledge shared will foster new partnerships for research, policy, and program design. Global Symposium on Savings, Assets, and Financial Inclusion

The Global Assets Project (a joint venture of CSD and the New America Foundation), the National University of Singapore, and the Financial Access Initiative of New York University convened 100 leaders from diverse fields to illuminate and inform strategies for universal inclusion in savings and asset-building products, programs, and policies around the world. Particular attention was given to the needs of people with limited resources in developed and developing countries. Support for the symposium was provided by the Citi, Levi Strauss, and FB Heron Foundations.
Understanding Civic Service: International Research and Application

CSD hosted the latest research on civic service and volunteerism worldwide. Civic Service Research Fellows presented their research in four separate panels on international service, service-learning, national service, and service in Latin America. A range of countries were represented, including Australia, Brazil, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Germany, Guyana, Nepal, Turkey, and Uruguay. Each panel addressed program and policy issues related to service and development. Support was provided by the Ford Foundation.
Second Annual International Roundtable on Service and Volunteerism

The roundtable marked the beginning of the National Conference on Volunteering and Service. Key plenary discussions included volunteer engagement in meeting millennium development goals, research highlighting effective volunteer service policy models, and addressing global conflict through service and interfaith dialogue. Multiple work sessions allowed participants the maximum opportunity to exchange best practices and strategies for results on topics ranging from at-risk youth mentoring to volunteer recruitment and corporate engagement in service programs. The roundtable was hosted by the Corporation for National and Community Service and the Points of Life Foundation. Support was provided by CSD and the Ford Foundation.
International Service in the Context of Globalization

CSD and the Institute for Volunteering Research in the UK, in partnership with the Center for International Studies at the University of Missouri, St. Louis, convened 35 researchers and leading practitioners in international service, representing 15 countries. The purpose of the conference was to document what is known about international service and to identify key questions and strategies to guide future research. Support was provided by the Ford Foundation.
American Dream Demonstration Research Conference: Taking the Measure of the American Dream Demonstration

The Downpayments on the American Dream Policy Demonstration (ADD) was the first large test of the efficacy of Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) as a route to economic independence for low-income Americans. Thirteen community-based organizations from around the country operated IDA programs as part of the Demonstration. By the Demonstration's completion, these organizations established 2,364 IDAs in their low-income and asset-poor communities. This Demonstration also catalyzed and connected a rapidly expanding field of community-based IDA programs around the country. The 2005 Research Conference gathered researchers in ADD to share their findings and discuss program and policy implications. Support provided by the Ford Foundation, Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, FB Heron Foundation, MetLife Foundation, CFED, and CSD.
From Democratic Consolidation to Social Development: Mainstreaming Social Development in the Indonesian Welfare System

CSD co-sponsored a conference and workshop at the State Islamic University School of Social Welfare, in Jakarta, Indonesia. The conference focused on the issues of mainstreaming social development in the Indonesian welfare system. The workshop explored the possibility of adapting and incorporating an asset-building approach into Indonesian social policy. The conference was attended by 100 participants including scholars from 8 schools of social welfare, government officials, and NGO activists. The workshop was attended by 30 participants representing 4 schools and government officials. Support was provided by the Indonesian Ministry of Social Welfare; Department of Social Welfare, University of Indonesia; Bandung College of Social Welfare; and CSD.
International Conference on Asset Building and Social Development: Theory, Research, and Policy

International scholars and experts from China met to study asset-based policy and its potential impacts and applications in China. International scholars introduced the theory and practice of asset-based policy. Experts from China focused on Chinese social policies for poverty reduction and development. Discussion sessions explored how lessons from Chinese social development can inform future international policy developments, and how international experiences might be adapted to the unique circumstances of China. Support was provided by Shandong University, CSD, and the Chinese Academy of Social Science.
Building Tribal Economies: Linking Asset-building Strategies

Tribal leaders, tribal community members, and other interested stakeholders convened to discuss several potential asset-building development strategies for Indian Country, and how tribes might go about establishing these strategies in their communities in culturally appropriate ways. Civic Service: Impacts and Inquiry: An International Symposium

The Center for Social Development hosted its second international research forum on civic service. Papers commissioned by civic service scholars were presented and discussed by experts in the field of civic service and volunteerism. More than 20 countries were represented among the approximate 60 attendees. CSD's research on civic service is an initiative of the Global Service Institute (GSI) and funded by Ford Foundation.
Toward a Global Research Agenda on Civic Service: An International Conference

The purpose of CSD's first international conference was to document the cultural, social, political, and economic issues that affect the development, implementation, and assessment of civic service around the world. Papers delivered at the conference were later published in a special issue of the Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly edited by Amanda Moore McBride and Michael Sherraden.
