Building Assets for Low-Income Families

This meeting was convened to initiate a strategic planning process for the development of an inclusive statewide asset building coalition for Louisiana. Special focus was placed on assessing and identifying policies and programs that stand to assist with community development and rebuilding efforts currently underway in the region, particularly in areas hardest hit by recent hurricanes, such as Hurricane Katrina. This event was attended by organizations from six southern states and organizational representatives from credit unions, local and federal government agencies, policy & research institutes, and numerous not-for-profit agencies that are actively involved in the asset building field. The Federation of Southern Cooperatives/LAF hosted the meeting.

An annual event hosted by Alcorn State University Extension Program and Mississippi Association of Cooperatives, this conference drew individuals and organizations from around the region to discuss state and regional developmental trends in the asset building, agriculture, and business fields. Dr. Ntam Baharanyi, Professor and Extension Economist & Agricultural & Resource Economics Coordinator at Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama, served as opening speaker for the Wealth Creation Track of Workshops.
Eleventh Annual Booker T. Washington Economic Development Summit

The conference focused on economic development for the state of Alabama and surrounding regions. Dr. Kilolo Kijakazi, Program Officer for the Economic Development Unit in the Asset Building Community Development Program at the Ford Foundation, served as plenary speaker for the day’s events.
