Research indicates that international service is increasing in scope and significance around the world, yet it is the least studied form of civic service. International service is defined as service across borders. In an era of increasing globalization, international service may have significant potential to contribute to international peace, cooperation, and development. CSD's research explores how to create avenues for participation in international service and to ensure that it provides meaningful and long-lasting value to both sending and hosting communities.
In addition to other research on international service, CSD has initiated a global research agenda on international service in collaboration with the Brookings Institution. This research agenda will
- Assess the nature and scope of international service;
- Conduct impact research to inform effective practices; and
- Develop capacity and global networks.
