Youth service is a formal and intensive volunteerism that takes a range of institutional forms including service-learning, national service, and international service. CSD's research on youth service explores and measures the effects of service on youth and on the communities they serve. Another important area of interest is server inclusion.

Through service, youth are mobilized and organized to address social, economic, health, and environmental issues. While the orientation of these programs may be to create lasting social, cultural, educational, and civic outcomes among youth, the young people are also effecting change in the individuals, organizations, and communities they serve.
