Building Financial Capability and Assets in America’s Families

This essay serves as introduction for Building Financial Capability and Assets in America’s Families, a special issue of Families in Society. The issue developed from papers presented during Financial Capability and Asset Building: Achievements, Challenges, and Next Steps, a national conference hosted at Washington University in St. Louis by the Center for Social Development in the Brown School and by the Financial Social Work Initiative in the University of Maryland School of Social Work.

As the editors note, “The contributions examine various ways practitioners can increase families’ financial abilities, as well as approaches to expanding financial and economic opportunities for families. It also explores policies and programs that increase family assets so that they can respond to emergencies, offset debt, and build a more hopeful future.”
