Asset Building Among U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents: The Role of Initial Legal Status

How does an immigrant’s initial legal status shape their outcomes in the United States?

This study examines the bank account ownership, investment account ownership, and retirement account ownership among legal permanent residents, finding that ownership is stratified by their initial legal status at entry into the United States. The findings reveal some of the asset-building resources and structures available to newcomers.
