The SEED for Oklahoma Kids experiment (SEED OK) is a longitudinal, randomized test of a statewide Child Development Account (CDA) policy. The essential feature of the CDA in SEED OK is a state-owned Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan account, which was automatically opened for newborns in late 2007 with an initial deposit of $1,000. For the analyses presented in this article, CSD researchers examined the policy’s effects on two educational outcomes: parents’ educational expectations for their children and preparations for their children’s postsecondary education. Data were collected in 2020, when SEED OK children were 13 years old. Published in Social Service Review, the findings show that the policy shaped the durability of parental expectations and parents’ preparations for their children’s education beyond high school. The results have direct implications for efforts to facilitate asset accumulation and mitigate educational disparities.
