The benefits of voluntary service are widely acknowledged—benefits to volunteers as well as to the communities served. But how do the features and management of volunteer programs affect volunteers’ experiences and engagement? Originally published in Social Work Research, this chapter presents findings from a longitudinal study of participants in Experience Corps, a national service program that places older adult volunteers in public elementary schools. The findings suggest which program features facilitate engagement of older adult volunteers and identify paths for future research.
