Cultivating networks to promote new approaches and perspectives

Smart Decarceration Initiative (SDI) is building networks of diverse thought leaders both within and outside of the criminal justice system in order to drive the era of decarceration. Sample projects in this strategic priority include the following:

From Mass Incarceration to Effective and Sustainable Decarceration
To launch SDI, we hosted the first national conference on decarceration, "From Mass Incarceration to Effective and Sustainable Decarceration," on September 24-26, 2015, at Washington University in St. Louis. The goal for this conference was to convene a diverse group of thought-provoking and inspiring leaders in policy, practice, advocacy and research to present their work and to help set an agenda for moving decarceration forward. The conference promoted collaboration across disciplines and sectors and stimulated scientifically driven, practical, and applied policy and community-based innovations.  To learn more about the conference and to view photos and videos from the event, click here.

Leading the “Promote Smart Decarceration” Grand Challenge
SDI is leading the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare Grand Challenge "Promote Smart Decarceration." This work represents an opportunity to position the social work profession as a leader in the decarceration movement. More than 100 social work scholars and practitioners have joined together to identify, develop and implement actionable steps to promote smart decarceration in three primary areas of social work: 1-Research; 2-Practice; and 3-Education.  To learn more about the “Promote Smart Decarceration” Grand Challenge, click here.
