Fourth National Forum of the Financial Social Work Commission

The Fourth National Forum of the China Social Work Education Association’s Financial Social Work Commission will convene at the Henan University of Economics and Law.

Founded in 2020, the Financial Social Work Commission operates as a hub for sharing research and insights into social work education strategies for improving the financial capability and developing the assets of vulnerable populations. To advance these priorities, the commission promotes training for social workers and other human-service professionals in the knowledge and skills required incorporate financial capability services into their practice.

Michael Sherraden

KEYNOTE ADDRESS
“Challenges of the New Age and the Mission of Financial Social Workers”

Michael Sherraden, PhD, is the George Warren Brown Distinguished University Professor at Washington University in St. Louis, founding director of Washington University’s Center for Social Development, and founding director of Next Age Institute, a collaboration between Washington University and National University of Singapore, where he was the inaugural S.R. Nathan Professor of Social Work. In creating and testing innovations to improve well-being, Sherraden has defined and informed a growing body of applied research and policy to promote inclusion in asset building. This work has influenced numerous asset-based policies and programs in the United States and other countries, including Child Development Account policies. Sherraden has received the Distinguished Career Achievement Award from the Society for Social Work and Research, the Career Achievement Award from the Association for Community Organization and Social Administration, and numerous other honors. TIME magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. He was recently named a Social Work Pioneer by the NASW Foundation.

“Human-Centered Financial Social Services: Financial Social Work as the Sociology of Finance in Practice”

Jin Huang, PhD, is the William and Helen Reichmann Research Professor in the Saint Louis University School of Social Work, part-time research professor in the Brown School, and research director at the Center for Social Development. Huang’s research interests center on social policies that support family and child well-being, with a particular focus on financial capability and asset building (FCAB) programs for disadvantaged populations. He has studied diverse populations with disadvantaged backgrounds, such as low-income children, children with disabilities, children of immigrants, and youth in transition to adulthood. Huang conducts research using large-scale policy experiments and national representative surveys. His research aims for universal FCAB policies for all.

His findings have contributed to improvements in FCAB policies in the United States, Mainland China, Taiwan, and Singapore. His research has appeared in peer-reviewed journals including JAMA Pediatrics, the American Journal of Public Health, Social Science & Medicine, Social Service Review, and Social Science Research.

Huang is one of the network co-leads to the Social Work Grand Challenge of Financial Capability and Asset Building for All. He serves as a member of the board of directors of Influencing Social Policy (ISP) and on the editorial board of the Journal of Policy Practice and Research. Previously, he was a practitioner working with people with disabilities in the United States and China, as well as a policy intern at the U.S. Social Security Administration.

In cosponsoring Fourth National Financial Social Work Forum, the Center for Social Development celebrates over 30 years of engagement to build knowledge and create impact.

CSD has been a partner to the Commission since 2020.

The forum is organized by the Financial Social Work Commission of the China Social Work Education Association, the School of Government Management at Henan University of Economics and Law, the MSW Education Center at Henan University of Economics and Law, and the Center for Social Development at Washington University.
