Implementation of School Meal Program Flexibilities

Food security

Building on a Center for Dissemination and Implementation pilot grant (Examining Mis-implementation of the National School Lunch Program), CSD Faculty Affiliate Sarah Moreland-Russell is leading a national team of researchers including CSD faculty Dan Ferris and Jason Jabbari) along with experts from the Brookings Institute and Temple University on a four year R01 study funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health to  assess nationwide policy implementation and decision-making processes and develop an agent-based model to demonstrate how policy changes affect school district meal program implementation. The grant aims to understand through a national survey and qualitative interviews how schools followed changes to the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program nutrition guidelines, which offered schools some flexibility. Ultimately, researchers hope to learn how changes impacted on student meal participation, health, and education outcomes.
