Bethel Ataro

Dr. Bethel Ataro is a trained medical doctor and public health advocate with a strong focus on creating large-scale health improvements for marginalized communities. After completing medical training in Ethiopia, Dr. Bethel transitioned to public health to address systemic challenges on a larger scale. She led health initiatives in nonprofit roles, including introducing survivor-centered, trauma-informed care for gender-based violence survivors, demonstrating a deep commitment to empowering vulnerable populations.

Currently pursuing a master’s in public health (MPH) at Washington University in St. Louis, Dr. Bethel works as a research assistant at the Center for Social Development, mentored by social work experts. Her experience working on the Financial Capability and Asset Building (FCAB) initiative has shaped Dr. Bethel’s understanding of how financial empowerment can be a critical tool in overcoming barriers to access, opportunity, and health, particularly in low-income countries.

Dr. Bethel is also a leader at the university, having held roles such as Co-Chair of the International Students Association and serving on various committees, including the Global Health Students’ Advisory Committee and the Graduate and Professional Students Advisory Board for the Relationship and Sexual Violence Prevention (RSVP) Center. These experiences highlight Dr. Bethel’s ongoing commitment to social change and global health.
