The New Development of Financial Social Work and Social Finance

What challenges and opportunities are emerging as financial social work and social finance develop in mainland China?

The New Development of Financial Social Work and Social Finance, the second national forum of the Financial Social Work Commission, will explore these issues and chart the agenda for future efforts.

Established in 2020, the Financial Social Work Commission of the China Association of Social Work Education operates as a hub for sharing research and insights into social work education strategies for improving the financial capability and developing the assets of vulnerable populations. To advance these priorities, the commission promotes training for social workers and other human-service professionals in the knowledge and skills required incorporate financial capability services into their practice.

Keynote Speakers

The second national forum, one of several forums convened in conjunction with the annual meeting of the China Association of Social Work Education, will feature keynote addresses by Dr. Michael Sherraden, Dr. Margaret S. Sherraden, and Dr. Jin Huang.

Michael Sherraden

Michael Sherraden is the George Warren Brown Distinguished University Professor at Washington University and Founding Director of the Center for Social Development in Washington University’s Brown School.

Margaret S. Sherraden

Margaret S. Sherraden is Professor Emerita in the School of Social Work at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, Research Professor in the Brown School, and an expert leading the Financial Capability and Asset Building initiative within the Center for Social Development. She is coauthor (with CSD Faculty Director Julie Birkenmaier) of Financial Capability and Asset Building in Vulnerable Households, which was recently translated into Chinese.

Jin Huang

Jin Huang is Professor in the School of Social Work at Saint Louis University, Research Professor in the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis, and the expert leading the Center for Social Development’s engagements in mainland China.

Haotian Zheng is a doctoral student at the Brown School and Research Associate at the Center for Social Development.
