The wide appeal of study abroad offerings and a desire to move beyond traditional experiences have renewed interest in models of international service and its impacts in the communities where students serve. But efforts to deliver international service programming must consider costs, the effects of service in host communities, the challenges providing enough opportunities to meet student demand. This special issue presents contributions developed from papers presented during International Service and Higher Education: At the Threshold of a New Era, an April 2011 symposium convened at Washington University by the Center for Social Development, the Gephardt Institute for Public Service, and DukeEngage of Duke University, in partnership with the Brookings Institution, the Building Bridges Coalition, and Service World. The symposium drew participants from higher education and volunteer-sending organizations into insightful exchanges on service models and strategies for addressing the other challenges of international service.
