In this introduction to a special issue on international service and higher education, Guest Editors Eric Mlyn and Amanda Moore McBride briefly sketch the rationale for the issue and summarize the six articles, which developed from papers originally presented during International Service and Higher Education: At the Threshold of a New Era. The April 2011 symposium was held at Washington University by the Center for Social Development, the Gephardt Institute for Public Service, and DukeEngage of Duke University, in partnership with the Brookings Institution, the Building Bridges Coalition, and Service World. Emphasizing the broad importance of citizen diplomacy, Mlyn and McBride frame the symposium and special issue as components of an ongoing effort to develop international service as a field of study.
