This study examines the complexities that confront national and international service efforts in sub-Saharan Africa. The authors also sketch a path for subsequent inquiries, identifying institutional impediments to service, the need for additional research capacity, and a concept of service that functions within a broad social development strategy.
This article and the others in this special issue were initially presented at Toward a Global Research Agenda on Civic Service: An International Conference. Held in 2002 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the conference was organized and hosted by the Center for Social Development.
