Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Sites in Native Communities

Many low-to moderate-income households are unaware they are eligible for a tax refund or various tax credits such as the EITC. Tools such as the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) offers tax preparation services to low- and-moderate-income households in ordre to reduce the cost of tax filing and preparation and educates clients about these benefits. The goal of this specific study is to explore the effectiveness of outreach and education efforts in Native communities through VITA services. Results of the study found that outreach and education efforts need to start early in the tax season, and that VITA sites need increased support in order to be effective in these efforts.
