The 29th annual conference of the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR) will feature the work of 41 affiliates of the Center for Social Development (CSD) across 72 events. Faculty, staff, and associated researchers will contribute to 11 symposia, 3 roundtables, 16 oral presentations, 5 flash talks, and 30 poster presentations. They will convene five Special Interest Group sessions, including two as leaders of Grand Challenges for Social Work networks.
In addition to contributions on financial capability, asset building, and a new national Child Development Account policy – the center’s established areas of strength – CSD researchers will share work on a guaranteed-income experiment, the use of financial capability programming in justice-system diversion, and numerous other subjects.
The annual meeting is a gathering point for social work researchers from around the world. This year, they will come together in Seattle, WA, from January 15 through January 19.
The society’s convening is also a forum for recognizing excellence. Research Director Jin Huang will be inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare in a ceremony on Saturday, January 18. Established in 2009, the professional society recognizes the achievements of distinguished social-work scholars and practitioners.
An internationally renowned expert in financial capability, financial social work, the intersection of disability and poverty, and asset-based social policy, particularly Child Development Account policy, Huang is the William and Helen Reichmann Research Professor at Saint Louis University School of Social Work and Research Professor in the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis. He is the author of numerous peer-reviewed studies in such prestigious journals as JAMA Pediatrics, BMJ, the British Journal of Social Work, the American Journal of Public Health, Social Service Review, Social Science Research, and Social Work.
Huang is one of 10 new fellows to be inducted this year.
In addition, Faculty Directors Fred Ssewamala and David Ansong will be inducted as fellows of the Society for Social Work and Research. The ceremony will be held on Saturday, January 18. Fellowships are awarded in recognition of scholarly achievement, leadership, and contributions to the society.
Ssewamala is the William E. Gordon Distinguished Professor in the Brown School, Director of the International Center for Child Health and Development, and Director of the Smart Africa Center. Ansong is Associate Professor and Wallace Kuralt Early Career Distinguished Scholar in the School of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
As scholars gather in Seattle, CSD faculty, staff, and affiliates are looking forward to sharing their work and celebrating colleagues.
